US Shuts down Scare-ware sellers

According to this BBC Article, the US is moving to shut down the suppliers of so called "Scare-Ware" software. Scareware software is software that scans your pc for viruses, porn and more and always comes back with the kind of results that would scare anyone into buying their software to remedy the solution, at about $40 - $60 a pop. At the PC Centre Nantwich we were over-run with PC's during the summer that were infected with scareware, the most popular was Vundo virus (XP Anti-virus 2009).

If you have noticed software running that you havent installed then you could be infected by scareware or a virus.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7779223.stm

Ofcom to monitor ISP's

As of the 5th December 2008 Ofcom will be monitoring ISP's (internet service providers) to ensure that they are adearing to a new agreement.

The code requires net firms to:

• Give new customers an accurate estimate of the maximum speed their line can support.

• Explain how technical issues could slow speeds and give advice about how to combat these problems.

• Downgrade a customer's deal, at no penalty, if line speeds are a lot lower than the original estimate.

If your changing ISP's check to see if they are signed up to the new agreement.

This should stop people signing up to the "up to 8Mb" schemes but receive lower

Nvidia Launches Physx drivers

Nvidia have now released its physx drivers that allow 8 series G92 core graphics cards to use its core GPU as a physx processor. By utilising the superfast cores on the Nvidia cards your pc is able to play games that incorporate millions of moving and movable particles without impeding on the performance of the PC. If your PC trys to manage these millions of particles, moving objects and interactive materials without the aid of a Physx card or physx drivers then you will be lucky to reach anything more than 20FPS (on a Q6600, 8800GTS), however with the help of the Physx card you may get 60+. On the Nvidia website there is also a free game called Warmonger which utilises the physx drivers to a great extent, its great fun to shoot up planks of wood and watch them splinter into realistic pieces and in a realistic manner or shoot a flapping flag and watch it rip and tare and flap in 2 parts. If this is the future of gaming I cant wait for the new titles to be released, but it not only uses the GPU for physx it can also be used for video encoding using the bada-boom application (demo available from the website). I personally think ATI have seriously got their work cut out to achieve the same on their cards. Get the latest drivers from here
