US Shuts down Scare-ware sellers
Posted by admin on Saturday, December 13 @ 22:50:28 GMT (25 reads)
Security alerts, including virus updatesAccording to this BBC Article, the US is moving to shut down the suppliers of so called "Scare-Ware" software.  Scareware software is software that scans your pc for viruses, porn and more and always comes back with the kind of results that would scare anyone into buying their software to remedy the solution, at about $40 - $60 a pop.  At the PC Centre Nantwich we were over-run with PC's during the summer that were infected with scareware, the most popular was Vundo virus (XP Anti-virus 2009).

If you have noticed software running that you havent installed then you could be infected by scareware or a virus.

Ofcom to monitor ISP's

General NewsAs of the 5th December 2008 Ofcom will be monitoring ISP's (internet service providers) to ensure that they are adearing to a new agreement.

The code requires net firms to:

• Give new customers an accurate estimate of the maximum speed their line can support.

• Explain how technical issues could slow speeds and give advice about how to combat these problems.

• Downgrade a customer's deal, at no penalty, if line speeds are a lot lower than the original estimate.

If your changing ISP's check to see if they are signed up to the new agreement.

This should stop people signing up to the "up to 8Mb" schemes but receive lower

Nvidia Launches Physx drivers
Posted by admin on Sunday, September 28 @ 22:46:02 BST (145 reads)
New downloads, including driversNvidia have now released its physx drivers that allow 8 series G92 core graphics cards to use its core GPU as a physx processor.  By utilising the superfast cores on the Nvidia cards your pc is able to play games that incorporate millions of moving and movable particles without impeding on the performance of the PC.  If your PC trys to manage these millions of particles, moving objects and interactive materials without the aid of a Physx card or physx drivers then you will be lucky to reach anything more than 20FPS (on a Q6600, 8800GTS), however with the help of the Physx card you may get 60+.  On the Nvidia website there is also a free game called Warmonger which utilises the physx drivers to a great extent, its great fun to shoot up planks of wood and watch them splinter into realistic pieces and in a realistic manner or shoot a flapping flag and watch it rip and tare and flap in 2 parts.  If this is the future of gaming I cant wait for the new titles to be released, but it not only uses the GPU for physx it can also be used for video encoding using the bada-boom application (demo available from the website).  I personally think ATI have seriously got their work cut out to achieve the same on their cards.  Get the latest drivers from here

I personally think that a web site is essential to the majority of businesses small and big, even if the web page just has your contact details. Internet search engines are being used more and more to find local businesses and is taking business searches away from phone books, therefore if your not on the net theres a good chance that you wont be discovered. General NewsOctober 2007
Internet Bosses are being quizzed, over the current internet speeds that customers are getting. In September computeractive ran a survey on readers bandwidth, out of 3000 readers who took part in the survey 62% got less than half their advertised speed. Ofcom have said that they are “aware” of the situation and are looking into it.
AMD are planning on releasing TRIPLE core CPU’s soon, while Intel are storming ahead with the Core2Duo and the Quad core, AMD are sneaking up with a triple core CPU. If rummers are true then the ‘Triple’ core is actually a faulty Quad core, but dont let that put you off as it might be a good marketing and financial idea. Out of every wafer of silicon they use for CPU’s there is wastage when 1 of the 4 cores is faulty, but with AMD’s new core they can easily turn off the faulty core or even 2 or 3 of them to make them into triple, dual or even single core CPU’s. This should hopefully greatly reduce the amount of wasted silicon and keep stock levels up and pricing down. If the market starts to run dry of dual, triple or quad cores AMD will easily be able to turn cores on and off during production to fill the market. We’ll have to wait to see what their performance is like and if the disabled cores can be turned back on by users... time will tell

Nvidia are possibly resurrecting the three and four way SLI in the new Nforce 780i chipset. While this sounds like a good idea to have 2 or 4 cards working as 1 the amount of power needed and the heat produced will be huge, that is if they manage to get the drivers working correctly under Vista. With the Price of 8800’s is dropping having a killer rig wont cost the earth (in money anyway).
